BIRTH DEFECTS

Renal Agenesis

Renal agenesis is the absence of the kidney. It can be unilateral - only one kidney has developed, or can be bilateral - both kidneys are absent. Bilateral renal agenesis, more common in boys, is incompatible with life, while unilateral renal agenesis is more common. Bilateral renal agenesis is often diagnosed in utero by the lack of a bladder (common with bilateral renal agenesis) and lack of amniotic fluid.
