Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is excessive fluid accumulation in the brain. Cerebral spinal fluid is what surrounds the brain and spinal cord and cushions them. When there is too much cerebral spinal fluid it can build up in the ventricles, or spaces, in the brain. This can cause pressure on the tissues of the brain as well as cause the baby's head to enlarge.
Hydrocephalus is most often treated with a surgically placed shunt. The shunt diverts the cerebral spinal fluid away from the brain and to another part of the body where the fluid can be safely and effectively absorbed.
